There are times when you have to check if your network or a specific site is responding correctly or is it down. Generally we do it via the command prompt using the Ping command. The Ping test lets us know if our network is responding or we are getting a “Request Timed Out” Error Message. Thus we can check both the latency of our own internet connection or check if a specific website is down or now.

However, we can’t get a graphical view of what’s happening via the Command Prompt, that where MetaPing comes into play. Its a nifty little utility (about 700Kb), that lets us visualize this process and we can see what exactly is happening on the network or is site down or not. Its a Visual Ping Monitor and It also lets us store historical data thus we can monitor how a website or a webhost behaves during a specific time period.

Host grouping for quick problem analysis:

MetaPing lets you create groups of Hosts – For eg, I have created a Group of Google, Yahoo and Bing as Web Standards in ping Response time with VikiApps and VikiTech along with them to check how my server is responding as compared to them. Helps us understand our Server is working well or not. Compared to Google all other server responses were slow, with Bing even giving a Request Time out a couple of times.

It can be used as a Diagnostic tool as well. We can also create a group of hosts for our own ISP and check how they are behaving. If there is a connectivity issue MetaPing can help us locate where the problem lies, whether its our ISP, Default Gateway or something on our own computer.
